Altamira, Mexico: New Fortress Energy (NFE) has successfully initiated LNG production at the Altamira Fast LNG 1 unit, marking a significant advancement in the LNG sector. This achievement was made possible with the support of ECOnnect Energy's innovative jettyless IQuay® technology.

Collaboration for increased Energy Security

First LNG represents a transformative moment for our Company and the industry as a whole, and reaffirms our position as a fully integrated leader in the global LNG market.”
- Wes Edens, Chairman and CEO of New Fortress Energy.

The Altamira project reached mechanical completion in January 2024, and LNG production has now commenced. The infrastructure includes three specialized rigs - Pioneer I, II, and III - and the 160,000 cbm floating storage unit, Penguin FSU. A jettyless IQuay® F-class system delivered by ECOnnect makes the connection between the rigs and the FSU, enabling clean and efficient LNG transfer.

With a capacity of 1.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility is set to significantly bolster global energy security. By adding substantial LNG capacity, the project enhances the reliability and flexibility of energy supplies, crucial for meeting fluctuating demand and mitigating risks associated with geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions.

The first LNG cargo is expected to be dispatched soon, marking a new era for the region's energy supply. Altamira Fast LNG 1 is the first export facility to ship natural gas from Mexico to global markets. This milestone solidifies NFE's presence in the global LNG market and showcases the potential of the IQuay technology in driving industry advancements.

Watch a breakdown of the facility in NFE's video announcing First LNG:

NFE chose jettyless for more sustainable LNG production

ECOnnect Energy's jettyless IQuay system allows for seamless LNG transfer without the need for traditional jetty infrastructure, significantly reducing environmental impact and enhancing operational flexibility. Since the IQuay made history with jettyless LNG transfer in 2017, the design has been adapted for multiple applications, such as green ammonia production, as well as downstream carbon-free fuel and CCS. The flexibility of the transfer system enables universal vessel connection with minimally intrusive installation.

The IQuay technology's adaptability and efficiency has set a new standard in the LNG industry. By eliminating the need for extensive shore-based infrastructure, the IQuay system significantly lowers project costs and environmental footprint.

About New Fortress Energy and the Altamira Project

New Fortress Energy Inc. is a global energy infrastructure company dedicated to addressing energy poverty and accelerating the world’s transition to reliable, affordable, and clean energy. NFE owns and operates natural gas and LNG infrastructure and an integrated fleet of ships and logistics assets to deliver turnkey energy solutions to global markets. The company’s assets and operations reinforce global energy security.

The Altamira Fast LNG project, located off the coast of Tamaulipas, Mexico, leverages NFE’s proprietary Fast LNG technology. This approach combines existing FLNG technology with a modular, offshore design, allowing for efficient liquefaction of natural gas. The project received an export permit from Mexico’s Ministry of Energy in June 2023, authorizing NFE to export up to 7.8 million metric tons of LNG through April 2028.

During an earnings call in November last year, NFE’s CFO, Chris Guinta, noted that the project achieved first gas in just 31 months following the final investment decision made in March 2021, which is much faster than comparable projects. The Altamira project will continue to benefit from rapid and flexible operations thanks to the jettyless IQuay technology. Their collaboration with ECOnnect Energy is part of a broader strategy to provide low-cost LNG through modular and mid-sized liquefaction technology. This approach is intended to lower costs and accelerate deployment compared to traditional liquefaction facilities.

Commited to sustainable energy solutions

The success of the Altamira project highlights the importance of collaboration and innovation in the energy sector. It sets a precedent for future projects, demonstrating how cutting-edge technology can overcome logistical challenges and deliver efficient, sustainable energy solutions.

"We are proud to contribute to the success of the Altamira Fast LNG project, enabling NFE to fulfill their strategy to provide clean, low-cost LNG through fast-track modular and scalable technology. We’re always happy to collaborate with companies whose visions align with ours. The Altamira project exemplifies how advanced solutions can enhance operational efficiency and environmental sustainability, underscoring our commitment to driving forward-thinking, sustainable energy solutions globally."

Spread mooring uses multiple anchors and standard components for quicker, less intrusive installation, while dolphin mooring relies on fixed structures that require heavy civil works and longer lead times. This makes spread mooring more flexible and environmentally friendly, with higher operational uptime and easier adaptation to floating transfer systems like the IQuay C-Class. Recent projects show that spread mooring is becoming a preferred choice for LNG terminals where speed, sustainability, and adaptability are priorities.

ECOnnect Energy is pleased to announce significant progress in the development of the IQuay Regas Terminal, having recently secured two pre-FEED contracts for the fast-track modular regasification (regas) solution. The IQuay Regas Terminal consists of a Floating Storage Unit (FSU), a modular floating regas platform (the R-Class), ship mooring and subsea or floating pipelines to shore for transfer of high-pressure gas. These two milestones underscore the growing market interest in fast, floating, and flexible alternatives to traditional regasification infrastructure.
