The ability to rapidly restore critical energy infrastructure is becoming more important than ever. Additionally, defence operations call for access to fuel and energy where it is needed, fast. ECOnnect, with its series of floating IQuay technologies, can play a crucial role in enabling countries to prepare for potential foreign hostile attacks.
In today's challenging geopolitical landscape, energy security and defence resilience have become critical concerns for Europe. Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have revealed the fragility of traditional infrastructure and exposed new vulnerabilities in supply chains and energy delivery. As the European Union and NATO intensify efforts to strengthen defences and emergency preparedness, solutions that offer mobility, flexibility, and rapid deployment are rising to the forefront.
Geopolitical challenges in Europe
Geopolitical tensions have deepened across multiple fronts, with the war in Ukraine exposing critical gaps in Europe’s defence capabilities and energy resilience. Ongoing instability in the Middle East, including conflicts that threaten major maritime corridors, adds further pressure to global energy flows and European supply chain security. In response, the EU is stepping up its efforts by committing substantial resources to defence, infrastructure protection, and emergency preparedness over the coming decade. Recent incidents such as the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines and the Finland–Estonia Estlink-2 power cable, have underscored the vulnerability of Europe’s maritime-based critical infrastructure. These developments highlight the urgent need to reinforce both energy security and defence readiness to address an increasingly complex threat landscape.
Ensuring Energy Security
ECOnnect Energy's innovative IQuay systems have the potential to play a critical role in ensuring resilience and preparedness against potential sabotage or attacks on energy infrastructure. With its modular and movable infrastructure, the IQuay systems offer robust solutions for maintaining energy supply continuity in critical defence situations.
The IQuay is designed for rapid deployment, making it an ideal solution for emergency scenarios. In the event of an attack on traditional energy infrastructure, countries can deploy IQuay units stored as backups to quickly restore energy and fuel supply. This flexibility ensures that energy needs are met without significant delays, minimizing the impact of any disruptions.
The IQuay C-class has been used for intermediate ad-hoc operations in Norway for several years already. The unit is floated to site using a tugboat, and full LNG import capabilities are only a few hours of installation away.
Strategic and Defence Applications
In scenarios where forward operating bases require rapid fuel supply without existing port infrastructure, the IQuay enables immediate offshore transfer with minimal setup time. The system’s mobility and quick deployment make it highly suitable for defence operations, where flexible and resilient energy delivery is essential. Whether supporting missions in remote coastal zones or replacing damaged terminals, the IQuay ensures that energy needs are met quickly and reliably. Its ability to operate in challenging environments further enhances its utility in unpredictable or hostile settings.
Moreover, the IQuay systems enhance operational safety by reducing the need for conventional marine construction and onshore handling. By enabling direct offshore transfer of gas, it helps streamline logistics while minimizing risk and complexity in operations.

Case Studies and Proven Success
Recently, ECOnnect Energy has demonstrated the effectiveness of the IQuay systems in various projects worldwide. For instance, the deployment of an IQuay F-Class system for New Fortress Energy’s Fast LNG 1 Facility in Altamira, Mexico showcases the system's capability to enable a low-cost, rapid and high-performance energy supply solution. This project highlights the system’s ability to operate in extreme weather conditions and its integration with one of the many compatible floating storage units (FSUs). Additionally, the IQuay's successful implementation at the Wilhelmshaven II LNG terminal in Germany underscores its role in enhancing energy security. The project involved the installation and commissioning of the IQuay F-Class, which enabled direct natural gas transfer from an FSRU to shore without the need for fixed marine jetties. ECOnnect’s involvement and the IQuay system were instrumental to the rapid deployment of this project, following the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline, critical to Germany’s energy security.
Resilience Through Innovation
ECOnnect Energy's IQuay platform is a game-changer in ensuring energy security and preparedness. Its rapid deployment, flexibility, and scalability makes it an indispensable tool for both emergency response and defence applications. By leveraging the IQuay's capabilities, countries can safeguard their energy infrastructure against potential threats and ensure a continuous and reliable energy supply in any situation. As global risks evolve, modular and jettyless technologies like the IQuay will be essential to building a secure and adaptive energy future.
